Architecture is about far more than creating beautiful buildings. At least, that’s how South Architects director Craig South sees it.
Nearly 30 years into his career, Craig remains driven by the same things that first drew him to architecture.
“The most important thing is listening,” he says. “Every client comes to us with a unique set of aspirations, experiences, and priorities. Realising a vision isn’t about simply providing what someone describes; it’s about uncovering opportunities they may not have considered.”
That people-first philosophy sits at the heart of South Architects. Rather than following a signature architectural style, the practice focuses on creating the right solution for every client, guided by its values of excellence, creativity, integrity, respect, and generosity.
“Architecture is ultimately about people. Buildings are important, but it’s the lives lived within them that matter most.”
For today’s homeowners, Craig says priorities have shifted. Clients are increasingly seeking forever homes that balance beauty with practicality – homes that are warm, energy efficient, low maintenance, connected to their landscape, and designed to evolve alongside changing lifestyles. Just as importantly, they want spaces that support wellbeing.
“Great architecture creates emotional connections and enhances daily life,” he says. “Joy isn’t always found in grand gestures. Often it’s the morning sun falling across your favourite coffee spot, a sheltered outdoor area where family gathers, or a perfectly framed view from your favourite chair.”
While South Architects delivers everything from commercial and industrial projects to medium-density developments, residential design remains especially rewarding.
“A home is where life happens. It’s where families grow and memories are made.” Seeing clients walk through their completed home for the first time, he says, never loses its magic.
Current projects span New Zealand, from bespoke family homes and rural retreats to large commercial buildings, with growing demand for sustainable, practical architecture.
Beyond the drawing board, the practice also believes in giving back, supporting initiatives including KidsCan’s 2025 Pork Pie Charity Run and I Am Hope’s 60 Hour Buildathon.
Reflecting on his career, Craig says the projects that stand out aren’t necessarily the biggest, but those built on trust. “The best projects are where clients allow us to push boundaries. That’s when architecture becomes something truly special.”
