Beyond the sales
Many will know Adam Heazlewood from his real estate success. Avenues finds out about the man behind the sales.
Adam Heazlewood’s real estate career is one to take notice of. With more than a billion dollars in property sales to his name, he has established himself as one of Christchurch’s leading real estate professionals. But beyond the deals and the auctions is a man whose greatest joys are family, lasting friendships, and “anything outdoors”.
Ask Adam which of these loves fills his cup the most, and the answer comes without hesitation.
“Time with my family brings me the most fulfilment,” he says. “Being in an environment where there are no distractions and it’s just quality time.”
Beyond his Bayleys office, when he’s not working, you’ll usually find him heading for the hills, in the best way.
“Anything outdoors is important to me,” he says. “Anything that is away from the noise.”
Whether it’s hunting, riding motorbikes, or simply escaping the city, those moments provide balance for Adam – all enjoyed with his family and friends.
Adam says that relationships are fundamental to the way he navigates life and are something that he enjoys fostering. When talking about how his friends might describe him, Adam jokes that if you asked his mates while at the pub, they might offer “some sarcastic responses”, but he hopes they’d say he is “the gatherer – the organiser.”
This is because, several times each year, he brings “the lads” together for dinners that require “a bit of logistics”.
“All my friends have similar interests and hobbies, whether it’s motorbiking, hunting, or just generally being outdoors, so these have been longstanding connections. We also all love sport, and if we’re watching, we normally do that at my house.”
It’s a role that Adam naturally carries over into the workplace.
“Camaraderie means a lot to me,” Adam says. “I think that also reflects in what we’ve built here in terms of culture.”
Real estate was never a career Adam stumbled into. Growing up with parents who invested in property, he was constantly exposed to the industry and the agents working within it.
“I had the vision that this was what I was going to do since I was about 16.”
He entered this world when he was young, just 20, and believes those early years shaped the person he is today.
“It has made me immensely responsible from a young age and helped me grow up fast. Grow up fast in a good way. I’m still fun.”
“Probably what’s changed who I am the most is the people I’ve been exposed to,” he says. “I’ve met some phenomenal people who’ve influenced the way that I do things today. You take snippets from all the good you see and probably learn some good lessons from some of the bad you see as well.”
Today, Adam works alongside his wife, Dani, making family central to both worlds that he navigates.
“I’m the eldest of six children,” he says. “We’re incredibly close, and growing up in a big family cemented how important family is very early on. Now having my own family has geared that up a few more notches. It means the absolute world, and everything I do, both at work and at home, is to make that environment as good as it can be.”
