International travel may be off the cards, but ‘overseas’ adventures can still be had in Canterbury’s neighbour at 45° S, Southland. So, embrace the chance to experience the wonders in your own country and head south. Few places have such varied landscapes nestled together like this region, right on the edge of New Zealand, anchoring the Southern Alps. It is a place of contrasts and boasts world-class scenery from mountain peaks to the deepest of lakes, to meandering rivers, fertile farmlands, lush primordial forests, and captivating coastlines.

RAKIURA/STEWART ISLAND

From Bluff, it’s only a short trip across the Foveaux Strait to Stewart Island/Rakiura. Basking in glorious sunsets and offering golden sand beaches next to the lush native wilderness, the island is renowned for its unique kiwi and bird spotting opportunities. There are plenty of local guides to show you some of the best spots.

OUT WEST

Western Southland offers a diverse landscape for activities, including adrenaline-pumping jet boat rides. For hikers, there’s the Hump Ridge Track which is set to be New Zealand’s next Great Walk. It’s a diverse and stunning three-day loop track from sub-alpine wilderness to sea-level views and over historic viaducts in the heart of a native forest.

EXPLORE THE SOUTHERN SCENIC ROUTE

A journey south from Dunedin, travel to The Catlins along the Southern Scenic Route – an incredible journey that has been ranked one of the top 10 drives in the world, and for good reason. The beautifully rugged Catlins coast is a must-do. With its spectacular coastal stretch, it is home to an array of marine life. Visit Tumu Toka CurioScape to learn about the region’s wildlife, people, and its history.

HOME OF CLASSIC MOTORING

Invercargill pays somewhat of a homage to wheels and motoring legends, whether they raced it, built it or collected it; you’ll find it on display at Bill Richardson Transport World, and Classic Motorcycle Mecca. But don’t be fooled, this isn’t just for motoring fanatics, these are more art galleries than garages, with a broad palette of colour schemes, engineering marvels, local stories, and plenty for the kids.

 VISIT BLUFF

Seafood is the speciality of Bluff. Famed for its delicious oysters, you would be crazy not to try the kai! Grab your road trip selfie at Stirling Point whilst taking in phenomenal 360-degree views of Southland and Stewart Island and stroll down the ocean sidewalk. For those with more time, check out the Lighthouse Gallery, Maritime Museum, Heritage Trail, and quaint streetscapes of yesteryear.

 RELAX IN RIVERTON

Heading west from Invercargill will take you to the beachside town of Riverton, which has a unique and relaxing vibe where art, surf, and agriculture are combined with local community charm. You will find local organic produce with old fashioned heirloom varieties to make you remember what a ‘real apple’ from your childhood tasted like. Take the time to visit Te Hikoi museum; a vibrant heritage attraction.
