People-first IT

Our digital world can feel relentless with constant updates, cyber threats, endless notifications, and technology that seems to evolve faster than most of us can keep up with.

Christchurch-based consultancy Zeal IT is trying to change that narrative, putting the human side back into IT through relationships, practical advice, and technology solutions designed to make life easier, not more complicated.

For many businesses, navigating technology can feel like trying to hit a moving target. Between cybersecurity concerns, cloud systems, software upgrades, compliance requirements, and the sheer pace of digital change, knowing what to invest in – and what to ignore – can feel like half the battle.

That’s where Zeal IT steps in to remove the guesswork. Founded on the premise that IT should empower people rather than confuse them, the consultancy is led by Mike Walker and Ricky Cunningham, both with decades of technical expertise.

“We created Zeal to bring a practical alternative to jargon and quick fixes,” says Mike. “Something built for the long game, where trust and transparency matter just as much as technical expertise.”

Mike brings nearly 30 years of experience across the IT sector, including work with integration providers throughout New Zealand and time as an Infrastructure Consultant for Statistics New Zealand. That breadth of experience – from corporate to small-business – has shaped Zeal’s philosophy: technology should work for people, not the other way around.

Ricky, meanwhile, brings his customer-first mindset developed over 25 years in service roles, including more than two decades within the IT industry.

“At Zeal, I oversee the technical and operational side of what we do, with a strong focus on security and compliance,” Ricky says. “We make sure solutions are tailored to each client rather than forcing everyone into the same template.”

That personalised approach sits at the centre of their work. Rather than pushing unnecessary upgrades or locking clients into restrictive contracts, the team focuses on helping businesses understand their options and make confident, future-focused decisions.

Mike says they take the time to understand how a business currently operates before recommending solutions, looking at its systems, goals, and challenges.

“Most businesses don’t need more technology – they need clarity,” Mike says. “An IT consultant helps you make smart decisions as you grow, strengthen security, or change systems.”

“There is no jargon, no BS – just real people who get IT and get your business,” Mike says. “We treat relationships as part of the technical solution. That’s what creates long-term success.”

The consultancy also places strong emphasis on prevention rather than panic fixes. From layered cybersecurity protection and compliance support to proactive monitoring, maintenance, and independent backup systems, the focus is on spotting issues early and building resilience before problems arise.

“We build resilience with layered protection and independent backups, so clients aren’t relying on a single safety net,” Mike says. “We use proactive tools to detect issues early rather than waiting for outages.”

Ricky says they have built a team around these values.

“Zeal’s team is intentionally practical and down-to-earth. They’re people who can do deep technical work and communicate clearly with clients. We’ve built a mix of experience across IT support, cloud services, cybersecurity, admin/operations, and long-run industry backgrounds – the common thread is people-first service and real accountability.”
