Get ready for mischief and magic

It’s time to play in Ōtautahi Christchurch. Bread & Circus – World Buskers Festival will be hitting the streets of Ōtautahi Christchurch for its 31st year from 19–28 January 2024.

Bread & Circus is one of the most loved and attended events in Ōtautahi’s summer calendar, transforming the city into the ultimate playground for colour, chaos, and charisma. The festival just won the title of the Best Arts or Cultural Event at the 2023 New Zealand Event Awards.

The 2024 festival will run for 10 days straight during the summer school holidays in the heart of central Christchurch across multiple busking pitches and venues.

Festival Director Scott Maidment says, “Bring out your inner child as we blend home-grown talent, festival favourites, as well as some fresh faces from far-flung locations. The line-up will see some mind-blowing acrobats, trapeze artists, and magicians, as well as comedians, musicians, and dancers, take to the streets and stage.”

As the city comes alive with the vibrant energy of the festival, there is no better time to check out some of the best hospitality spots in between shows.

In Ōtautahi, you are spoilt for choice when wining and dining. Right in the heart of all the busking action is Riverside Market – an indoor market and one of Ōtautahi’s most loved foodie spots.

If you are heading to an evening show and fancy making a night of it, head to The Terrace for world-class dining, set along the beautiful Ōtākaro, Avon River.

Or check out New Regent Street. It boasts an abundance of unique restaurants, vibrant bars, and indulgent dessert spots. You might even catch the tram running down the middle of the street. It’s as iconic to Christchurch as it gets!
