Bring on the snow, we're ready!

As the last of the small challenges are addressed, we feel as though Dylan is almost bulletproof; well, winter-proof at least. With the internal painting completed, a new slide-out pantry cupboard, log burner flue, and diesel heater; Rob, Billy, and I are ready for whatever Mother Nature throws at us.

Humans of Ōtautahi: James and Colin

“I probably spend a couple of hours a day building. My favourite Lego part is the two-by-four brick – I’ve always had a fascination for two-by-four bricks. One day, I was just randomly building with them, and I came up with the idea of a series of characters, and that’s the only brick I’ve used to build them.”

Sunday Drive: Molly

I purchased this car at 15. I saw one when I was walking home from school, and I just knew it was the car I wanted. I was looking on Trade Me for ages, and then a friend of a friend was selling his, so I swooped in. My favourite thing about the car is that it has personality, compared to most other cars, and all the conversations you have with people, at red lights, and at petrol stations. I even met my driving instructor just because he came up to admire the car!

Watch This Space: Elliot Francis Stewart

Tāmaki Makaurau artist Elliot Francis Stewart’s mural for the inaugural Flare Street Art Festival may have been the final work produced for the event (the artist’s arrival in Ōtautahi was delayed), but it definitely proved worth the wait! The serene scene, apparently at the end of a long day of toil in the garden, is both vibrant and peaceful.

Milestones and memories

How relevant it feels to look at what constitutes a milestone given I’m approaching two, both of which are deeply personal and equally significant. The first is the completion of my 28th year in the real estate industry, having started at the age of 32, and the second, you can probably guess if you add those two figures together!

The Countess' daughter

Christchurch beauty Monica Ducarel was tall, glamorous, strong-willed, and, according to social gossip, promiscuous. Humans of Ōtautahi: Kerryn

“I’m the only woman QC practising in Christchurch which is outrageous. When I graduated from law school, Judith Ablett-Kerr had just been made a QC. She was the third woman QC in New Zealand, and here we are, however many years later, and I’m only the sixth in the South Island.”

Sunday Drive: Daisy

My husband worked in a car yard in Brisbane, and she was traded-in. I had asked him to look out for one for me, and I was ecstatic when he bought her home. We moved back here in 2002 and bought her over in a shipping container. It took a long time to get over people looking and waving at me.

The background

I’ve always enjoyed dressing up – a penchant for it, you might say. I was a drama kid, and before that would dive deep into the family dress-up box, in our case, an old leather suitcase with generations of costumes inside, some requiring abstract thinking to bring a character to life.

Food that feels

I’ve always found solace in food. To me, food is so much more than sustenance or something we consume. It’s connection; it’s care; it’s the act of looking after someone. In so many ways, food is love.
